Introducing Captionizer for Confluence
Imagery is super important in documentation, as it adds interest and improves user engagement. Without context, however, some images can lose their meaning.
Clear captions are key to adding value for readers – but applying these to every single image on your pages can be lengthy and tiresome. As a result, captions are often overlooked.
The solution? Captionizer for Confluence – our newest app in the AppFox family.
Designed to save you time, and provide a better experience for your readers, Captionizer scans all images on your Confluence pages and instantly generates captions for each. It’s pretty clever stuff – and we’ve developed it using Atlassian’s flagship AI innovation: Rovo.
So, let’s dive in and discover:

How does Captionizer work?
Captionizer is a Rovo agent for use in Confluence. It’s available to download from the Atlassian Marketplace.
Once enabled, you can ask the Captionizer Rovo agent to scan any images on your Confluence page. Captionizer will analyze each one, and then automatically generate clear, concise captions and apply them to each image.
You can then review, edit or delete as required.

Why do you need Captionizer?
As we mentioned at the top of this piece, without proper labelling, images alone can’t tell us much.
Consider an organisation chart, populated with photos of people, but with no captions. Who are they? What are their roles?
How about screenshots in product documentation? Without clear captioning, will users understand what they’re looking at and, crucially, why?
Images need context to provide value to your readers, but we all know that time is in short supply, and it can be seriously laborious to go through multiple images and write descriptions for each. That’s where Captionizer can deliver real benefits:
- Instantly generates clear and accurate image descriptions
- Automatically applies captions to each image
- You retain control: You can approve, edit and reject each caption
- Provides context and clarity to all images on your Confluence pages
- Improves usability for your readers and enhances engagement
- All captions are simply formatted, for a clear and consistent experience
- Multilingual captions to reflect your users’ language
- Saves you time and effort!

How can you use Captionizer?
Captionizer is available to download for free from the Atlassian Marketplace. You must have Rovo enabled to use Captionizer (and, thankfully, as of April 2025, Rovo comes included at no extra cost for Premium and Enterprise users!)
Once you’ve installed Captionizer, simply hit ‘Chat’ in the top right of your Confluence navigation bar, and then ‘Browse agents’. You should be able to see ‘Captionizer’ in the drop down list (or you can search for it).
To start using your Captionizer agent, you can either use the suggested prompts (such as ‘label all images on my page’), or provide your own instructions.

For more info about using Captionizer and suggested prompts, it’s worth taking a look at our documentation, where you can learn much more!
Captionizer is free to use, but does operate a credits system, which enables each user to obtain 100 captions per month.
Every time you ask Captionizer to caption an image, the agent will also provide you with a credit update, so you know how many you have remaining. And, every month, your credits will renew.
Sounds great! What’s next?
If Captionizer sounds like it will save your team members time, and improve your Confluence documentation, then get yourself over to the Atlassian Marketplace.

As always, we’d love your feedback so we can keep improving and making sure Captionizer meets your needs. And, as Captionizer is a new member of the AppFox family, we’d also be grateful if you can spread the word, share Captionizer with your teammates and fellow Confluence fans, or drop us a rating or review on the Marketplace.
‘Til next time! AppFox over and out.
