Atlassian Announces Data Center Sunset: What Does This Mean For Your Marketplace Apps?
Recently, Atlassian made a significant announcement: Atlassian Data Center products will reach end-of-life by March 28, 2029.
As many of you use our Atlassian Marketplace apps, like Optimizer for Jira or Compliance for Confluence, on Data Center (DC), we know you’ll have a lot of questions. Today, we’ll run through what we know so far, and what this announcement means for you and your apps.
What will happen to your Data Center apps?
Here at AppFox, we will continue to invest in our range of Data Center apps.
We currently have the following apps running on Data Center:
- Optimizer for Jira
- Compliance for Confluence
- Approvals for Confluence
We have no plans to discontinue support or development for these apps for the foreseeable future. In fact, we are currently actively working on Jira 11 and Confluence 10 compatibility, and Atlassian’s announcement will have no impact on this work.
To keep up to date with our releases and planned enhancements for all AppFox DC products, you can head over to our documentation.
All AppFox Data Center Marketplace apps are still available to buy from the Atlassian Marketplace. We’re always happy to chat to you about your needs or provide a demo, to ensure you get the most out of your solutions.
A note on timelines
Whilst we plan to continue support for our DC Marketplace apps, Atlassian has announced that new customers will no longer be able to purchase Data Center Marketplace apps from March 30, 2026.
Existing DC customers can still buy new DC Marketplace apps until March 30, 2028, to support their migration journey.
After March 28, 2029, all of your DC Marketplace app licenses will become read-only.
DC to Cloud: What are your choices?
Whilst the sun-setting of Data Center products is still some time away, Atlassian is already encouraging customers to plan their next steps. For many of you – although we know not all – this will mean a migration to the Atlassian Cloud.
To support you with this transition, all our apps have Cloud versions, and migration pathways to help you get up and running quickly.
All four of our core Atlassian Cloud Marketplace apps are Cloud Fortified, whilst Optimizer for Jira also Runs on Atlassian for even greater data security and compliance.
DC vs Cloud
Looking for a comparison of features between your current Data Center apps and their Cloud counterparts? We’ve put together comprehensive comparison tables to the following:
- Optimizer for Jira Data Center vs Cloud comparison
- Compliance for Confluence Data Center vs Cloud comparison
- Approvals for Confluence Data Center vis Cloud comparison
Here at AppFox, we’ll also be happy to give you and your teams a demo of any of our Cloud apps so you can see them in action.
Why has Atlassian made this move?
For some of you following Atlassian’s continual focus on Cloud-only innovations (such as Rovo), this announcement may not have been a question of if, but when.
Atlassian has shared a number of compelling stats around how a Cloud-first future can unlock greater efficiency and collaboration for organizations. One major European airline, for example, made $600k cost savings per year, by moving to a centralized System of Work on the Atlassian Cloud. Another enterprise, meanwhile, saw cost reductions of 36% after migration to the Cloud.
Did you know?
Optimizer for Jira provides a fantastic helping hand when preparing for a Cloud migration.
It’s vital to spend time cleaning up your existing DC instance to make sure you only move across the data and configurations you actually need. Optimizer for Jira makes light work of this.
From providing a bird’s eye view of potential problem areas in your instance, to enabling you to bulk delete duplicate fields, the app turns hours of repetitive, manual Jira administration and clean-up work into moments.
To try Optimizer for Jira, or add it to your migration toolkit today, head over to the Atlassian Marketplace!
We understand that for some of you, barriers to the Cloud remain in place – especially for some of you handling regulatory requirements.
For those of you making complex decisions over the coming months and years, one thing is for sure. We will continue to support your Data Center AppFox Marketplace apps. And, as always, if you have any concerns or questions, please do reach out to us.
